Art Camp was great this year.. We learned and played with an airbrush. We made t-shirts and bags to carry home. We also did clay work and made a rabbit holding a carrot that holds your favorite pencil. We had a blast and are anixous for next year's camp. Camp dates this year were June 1st and 2nd. Time 9:00-1:00 $75.

Carnegie Visual Art Center, Decatur, Alabama

Carnegie Art Center in Decatur chose "Washed By the Water" to be on exhibit May thur June. In June, awards were on display at an Art Reception held at the Carnegie. There were close to 100 to 150 people there. David was able to attend with me. I was so suprized when I found my painting among all the talking crowd that it had a ribbon hanging on it. I won the Director's Choice Award with a montery value....It was so awesome.

This year's art show at Calhoun proved to be very exciting for me. I placed second place with "Washed By The Water". I placed third on the People Choice Award on the "Night Bistro" and a placement for all of my paintings in the show over all. Needless to say I was so excited.

Sorry it has been awhile since my last post. I have been spending time in the studio and time gets away from me before I know it. I will attempt to bring you upto date on the past happenings.

In April we traveled to Troy ,Alabama to a new show to me, called Troyfest. The city of Troy was incredibly hospitable and a wonder host.
We were presented with a great site for our tent and display that was surrounded by trees and lots of sidewalks for Dake's chair.

David was not able to go but our good friend Phillip Webster was great to come along and pitch in as always.

My sales were good at this show. I did notice the lack of education in the population of art. After talking with a local educator they are working at implementing more art in the school system.

Francsico Goya was a Spainsh painter. He painted during a time of war. His subject matters often consisted of death, dying and desolate matters of the war. In this painting the painter chose a pile of death fish. The fish are lit by the moonlight on the beach.

"Washed By The Water" Lyric Painting

This painting is a Lyric painting after the lyrics of the song ' Washed By The Water,' by NeedToBreathe. This is my interpretation of the lyrics. In the background are the literal words, of all the ugly hurtful sins of the world. The sins that can happen to us and hurt us. Sometimes according to the lyrics even our friends and loved ones can turn around and crucify us. But if one is washed by the water of Jesus all of those hurtful things really don't matter. Because one day we will all have the hope of a place were the hurtful things do not exist through Jesus Christ. I painted a child here to represent innocent and purity. The fun she displays shows the joy one celebrates as a new life in Christ. oil stretched canvas 18x30

Artist Statement 2008 Of Lynn Weatherford

Standing there, with my long blonde “dog ears” that earned me the nickname of “Buffy” (from 1970 T.V. program, Family Affair) from my grandmother. I knew today was the day. The day I had waited four long years to arrive.
At five years old, the desire to form shapes and apply color was deep within. (The smell of a new box of Crayola can still do it to me.) My older sister of four years brought home instructions for entering the school’s poster contest. Much to my disappointment one had to be in fourth grade to enter.( I could get on my soap box here, but I digress.)
I processed my ideas over and over again. I knew exactly what my future poster would be. Now all I had to do was wait four years. Four long years…..and then finally it was time to create my masterpiece.
My poster won first place in the fourth grade and first place over all. My first validation….! WOW! (My patience paid off in childhood and I hope that same patience will pay off in adulthood.)
I can’t take credit for this “stirring” that usually results in the form of my paintings. I’m not always sure if it is a gift or a curse. But I do know it was something that was born the same day I emerged from my mother’s womb….possibly earlier.
Denial was not even an option. (Been there, done that.) Denial just resulted in misery. So I have concluded, that my paintings are here and present, whether desirable or not. My paintings are here and present, whether they deck the halls of strangers or entertain each other with the dust bunnies under my bed.
My paintings reflect daily life in its chaotic setting. I take memories of everyday life. Sometimes the life is beautiful, sweet and kind. Other times it’s not. Sometimes life is even ugly.
My style is a marriage of impressionism and realism with the added flavor of emotion. The paint is usually laid with a palette knife of with a thick brush stroke. Color is applied to bring drama and vibrancy to all my paintings. Color sometimes has a mind of its own and takes over my brush leading its own way.
Van Gogh has long been among my favorites. Even my beloved furry companions have earned a right to carry his name.
My goal for today and here is to never stop learning…not to get to comfortable…never let my curiosity stop. I want to absorb every bit of information I possibly can to add to the spice of my life. I want to be the best I can be I guess to give honor to the “gift”. I want my art to mean something. Not just paint on a canvas.
Emotion plays a vital role in my paintings. It sometimes is even the driving force behind them. At times my emotions may lie dormant only to explode at a much later date.
Exposure is the hardest for me. I think the difficulty is because of the emotion involved. Exposure of my art often leaves me feeling very vulnerable. Even if the simplest form of art is exposed causes vulnerability which in turns to fear. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of being judged and not being understood. Fear of being stagnate. Harboring in the stagnant pond and becoming so comfortable that I stay there only because I’m scared of failure. Fearing I am not going to make it out…….…….

On April 16,

I was awarded first place for

the "People's Choice" Award

at Calhoun College

for my painting,

"Steal Birth".

I was also award an additional award for most votes

for my paintings over all.

IT has been an exciting month.

"WHOO RAH!!!!!"

April 3, 2008 was definetely a "WHOO RAH!!!" day.

First and for most, I have been married to my wonderful husband, David for 26 years.

Second of all, came as a big surprise.

April 3rd was the official opening of the

2008 Student Art Show

at Calhoun Community College, Decatur, AL.

They had over 200 entries.

They announced the awards in order from the merits awards first (which they had several).

Sophie Henkeil, one of my art students was awarded a merit award for her India ink wash drawing.

Also my" partner in crime" in art class,(friend), Jayne Schmidt received a merit award.

Congrats!

Then the eighth place up to the second place was announced.

Then the first place and the top award, which is Nathaniel Nelson Award and is the highest honor.

Yesterday was a surprisingly great moment for me

as I heard my name announced to receive the honor of the Nathaniel Nelson Award.

The award was for all of my works as a whole.

My professor announced it was the first year that the artwork competing ,

actually competed against each other

was by the same artist.

It was a great day....but still doesn't compare to twenty six years ago....

I feel very blessed. and honored...and doubtful that I deserved such an honor.

It is still kinda all surreal at this time.....

The "Presidental Award "and" People Choice Awards" will be announced next week.

We had to do a replica of a famous painting and study his or her palette.

Van Gogh used broken strokes and a palette of vivid blues and yellow.

This painting was done out of frustration.

Dake and I were having many struggles at college because the elevator was constantly breaking down. Dake's classes are on the second floor.

The administration did not see the urgency in repair like we did. This is a statement painting. It gives a twist on the walking population to have no other way to their destination but one way. And having that way "Out Of Order!".

(The President of the college is rumored to always wearing high heels...to me that would be a great obstacle but hey....)

This is a three piece art project to be hanged in a cluster with minimum of space between them.

It is entitled, "Dress Up". It deplicts Gracey dressed up in her Guatemalen hertiage hat on the top left panel. The right top panel shows her in her "play" dress up clothes.

The bottom panel reflects Gracey dressed

up in a custom made dress from her grandmother, Mimi Weatherford.

This French Hand sewn dress was made for Easter 2007.

The mirror image is the continuation of the "play" dress up panel.

"Steal Birth"

This painting is a statement painting.

The statement is "God sometimes say, "No!".

The title is a play on words.

Steal is used here not to say God stole my baby because my baby was always His.

Steal was used, upon his silent birth, because part of my heart was stolen.

The woman is nude to signify her vulnerability.

The woman's hands show tension to bring attention to her fight to keep her son with her.

Notice her finger nail slightly scratches the arm of God.

God's hands are gently enveloping the baby to lift him up. The softness is exhibited with his lightly luminous arms. The baby grasp God's hand to show he is comforted by His presence.

" Paxon's Journey"

This painting was inspired by a little boy's journey to heaven.

The young boy in this painting is flying on his dad's shoulders. I purposely placed him there because the dad unrightly carries the burden of his son's death. If you look

closely you will see three butterflies' silhoettes emerging from the boy (they are very light) and he turns in to a full butterfly landing on the hand of God. The hand of God is blended in the clouds.
